I am Ben, a final year Industrial Design student at Western Sydney University. My passion lies in designing products that bring comfort, functionality, and sustainability together. I enjoy exploring how design can improve both human and animal experiences, focusing on practical solutions with an emotional impact. My current project reflects this approach, combining research driven design with creativity to deliver something meaningful and useful.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Calming Dog Bed is a multifunctional pet product designed to enhance the comfort and wellbeing of dogs while offering convenience and style for owners. Drawing from research in animal behaviour (ethology) and human ergonomics, the bed creates a safe, calming space that helps reduce anxiety while also fitting seamlessly into modern homes. A key feature is the removable hood which provides a den like environment for security and comfort. The bed also includes reversible surfaces: natural hemp for a cooler, sustainable option, and soft faux fur for warmth. Its foam base ensures orthopedic support, making it suitable for dogs of all breeds and sizes. For portability, the bed uses detachable leather strap handles, allowing owners to easily carry it from place to place. The design is offered in multiple sizes (small, medium, large) to suit different dogs and households. Sustainability is central to the design, with durable materials chosen for longevity and reduced environmental impact. More than just a pet bed, this project positions the product as both a wellness solution for dogs and a stylish home furnishing. It blends functionality, sustainability, and emotional value, ensuring that the needs of pets and owners are equally considered. The Calming Dog Bed demonstrates how thoughtful design can positively impact everyday life for both humans and their companions.
