My name is Jose Michael Fernandez, and I am a student of industrial design. Throughout my degree, coming from the visual arts, I have been able to further develop my creative exploration and expression within design. It has opened up a whole new area of thought and perspective in the creative act. I’ve applied these capabilities across a range of projects and hope to continue making a meaningful impact on our built environment through future work.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Gumnut Retreat aims to create an environment that is designed not specifically, but with inclusivity for children with autism to help foster social integration and interaction through various sensory elements. Outdoor playgrounds can become overwhelming and chaotic. The Gumnut retreat focuses on providing the opportunity to have a low-sensory space for hyper-sensitive reactions. Children with autism experience differences in sensory processing, social interaction, and behaviour that influence their daily lives. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by challenges in social communication, sensory sensitivity, and repetitive behaviours. Play is crucial for development, helping children express emotions, build communication, and develop cognitive skills. For children with ASD, structured and imaginative play tailored to sensory needs promotes engagement and inclusion. Many experience hyper-sensitivity, becoming overwhelmed by stimuli, while others are hypo-sensitive, seeking extra stimulation. Understanding these differences supports the creation of inclusive, low-sensory environments. Playgrounds often cause sensory overload, so focusing on calming, low-sensory equipment is essential. Biophilic design elements inspired by Australian flora, such as gumnuts and gum leaves, can evoke calmness and connection to nature. These forms encourage emotional openness and allow children to feel part of their surroundings, fostering both sensory comfort and imaginative exploration. The Gumnut Retreat integrates inclusive and biophilic design principles to support children with autism through sensory-aware environments. By addressing hyper- and hypo-sensitivities, the project promotes calmness, engagement, and social interaction in low-sensory play spaces. Inspired by Australian flora, the design encourages emotional openness and a deeper connection with culture. The Gumnut Retreat demonstrates how sensitivity to sensory experiences can foster comfort, belonging, and meaningful participation for children with autism.
